Shipping Info and Arrive Alive Guarantee

Frequently Asked Questions and Shipping Information

This may seem like a lot of information, but please read it thoroughly. It is incredibly important when ordering live animals to know our shop policies and how your fish will arrive.

When you checkout you will click a box that says you have read all of this information and agree to these policies. Its for your benefit to read them fully. If you have any questions at all, feel free to reach out via the chat feature or via email at info@pnwbettas.com

What is your Arrive Alive Guarantee?

  • If your fish is DOA (dead on arrival) please email us (info@pnwbettas.com) with clear photos of the fish in the original shipping bag. DO NOT OPEN THE BAG. This needs to be done within 2hr of delivery. We will confirm this timeframe with the tracking information, no exceptions.
  • In cases of DOA we will issue store credit for the cost of the fish that can be used for future purchase at PNWBettas.com
  • Shipping is non-refundable
  • Because we cannot control your aquariums or water parameters, there is no guarantee/warranty on fish after they arrive in good health.
  • For USPS Priority shipping, the arrive alive guarantee is limited to transit durations of 4 days or less (Monday-Thursday). If your box takes more than 4 days to arrive we do not offer an arrive alive guarantee.
  • Giant and wild type bettas have an arrive alive guarantee ONLY on overnight shipments. This includes: UPS Next Day Air (saver, standard, and early)

If you believe the fish you have received is not in good health for any reason please reach out to us within 2 hr of delivery and provide photos. Keep in mind, the fish being pale is normal after shipping. It can be a stressful process and they may take some time to get used to their new home.

Live Plants Arrive Alive Guarantee

We guarantee the arrival of your plants in good condition. There may be a few dead leaves or mild melting after shipping which is standard when having live plants shipped. If your plants arrive with anything more then mild melting or other shipping stress, reach out to us for a full refund for the cost of the DOA (dead on arrival) plant.

Email us at info@pnwbettas.com within 6hr of delivery to make a DOA claim. The delivery time is determined by the tracking, which we will check to confirm the timeframe.

How are plants shipped?

All plants are shipped with some type of insulation, normally an insulated mailer. This helps to prevent heat/cold stress on the plants and reduce DOAs.

When temps are extremally cold/warm we will include heat/cold packs to ensure safe delivery. This is done at no added cost to you.

If you are having consistently cold weather (below 32 degrees F) or consistently warm weather (85+ degrees F), we recommend waiting for better weather to order. If we believe it will not be safe to ship to you, we will reach out via email.

Shipping Costs and Methods

  • Bettas are either shipped with USPS Priority or UPS Next Day air, which is chosen by the customer at checkout. Please see DOA policy above for more info on shipping bettas. The price is automatically calculated based on your order composition and location.
  • Plants are shipped with USPS Priority, which is calculated at checkout.
  • Merch is shipped with USPS First Class Mail
Combined Shipping:
  • If you are ordering live fish with any other items, shipping will display as "shipping" and automatically charge you for USPS Priority. If you would like to switch to overnight shipping, email us.
  • If you order plants and live fish, we will try and combine your order into one box if space allows. If we are able to do this, you will get a partial refund on the plant shipping cost. If not, they will arrive in 2 boxes. Live fish boxes are specially made to ship live fish, and don't always have room for plant orders.
  • Merch is made on demand, and ships from the print company, so it cannot be combined with any other shipping price

Is it safe to ship fish through the mail?

Generally speaking, yes! Shipping fish is very safe, and happens every day. Shipping is how fish get to all fish stores, how they enter the country, and of course how they get directly to your door! Of course there are considerations like the method used, weather, and how the box is handled in transit, but we do everything possible with safe packaging to ensure safe arrival.

Why do you require a care quiz?

We want to be different! Bettas are one of the most popular aquarium fish, but they are also one of the most mistreated. We think these beautiful fish deserve more than little bowls, and we want to do our part to ensure the fish we are selling are going to be well cared for.

How does the care quiz work?

Before purchasing a betta, you will need to pass the general betta care quiz.. You can find information on betta care under the betta care page, which should help you with the knowledge needed to pass the quiz. Once you pass the quiz a place to put your name and email will appear. This is so we can link your passed care quiz with your order. You can take the care quiz before or after ordering but please do it at least by the night before the scheduled ship date (listed at the top of the site). If you don’t have a passed care quiz before that time we will cancel your order and re-list the fish.

How old do I have to be to order a betta?

You must be 18 years or older to purchase a fish, or have parent or guardian permission

When will my fish ship?

We ship fish on Monday of each week. The banner at the top of the website will indicate the date your fish will ship. We cannot hold fish past the ship date listed at the top of the site. If you order, be prepared for your fish to ship on that posted day.

We reserve the right to hold your fish for shipping if we believe the weather is unsafe to ship in.

When your fish is shipped you will be emailed a tracking number, this will be sent to the email you input when your order is placed. Please keep a very close eye on your tracking updates. We highly suggest setting up text or email notifications for your order, this can be done on the UPS or USPS tracking page. This will allow you to get any updates about the delivery and get notified when it arrives. This will not only help get your fish inside sooner, but help you stay in the time  window of the DOA policy.

Where do you ship to?

We only ship to the US, excluding Hawaii, Alaska and US territories. We cannot ship fish internationally. If you are located in Hawaii or Alaska we CAN arrange a special order based on certain conditions. If you wish to do this please email us at info@pnwbettas.com

I'm local, can I come pick up my fish?

We do offer local pickups! But we do not currently have a storefront location open to the public. If you are local (Corvallis, OR) you may choose local pickup at checkout. I will email you within a week of your order to arrange a pick-up time and location. It will be a public location in Corvallis. Please note, I do not drive to meet half way if you are coming from farther out, you will need to drive into Corvallis if you choose local pickup.

Do I need to quarantine my fish/plants?

All of our fish have been through a brief quarantine period as well as preventative medications such as de-worming before they are shipped. We still recommend you quarantine your fish upon receiving them as well, especially if they are being added to an aquarium with other fish.

We also recommend you dip (bleach dip/salt dip etc.) your plants or quarantine them before adding to your tank as a preventive measure.

Do you offer cancellations or returns?

Buying any live animal is a commitment, we do not offer returns on any live fish (or plants).  All cancellations are subject to a 10% restocking fee. Orders that have shipped cannot be canceled.  Returns on unused dry goods are subject to a 10% restocking fee along with the cost of return shipping.
